“There is one type of carbohydrate that is far more dangerous than sugar. Many people consider sugar to be the worst, but there is something worse than that,” he was quoted as saying by Gethrey, Sunday (2/3/2025).

Dr. Berar assesses that the glycemic index is an important indicator in determining the impact of a food on blood sugar levels. For example, for example the glycemic index of sugar which has an index of 65, glucose 100, maltodextrin 116-136.

With a glycemic index that is higher than sugar and glucose, maltodextrin can cause a more significant surge in blood sugar.

“So, this is a carbohydrate that is not classified as sugar, but acts like sugar in a more dangerous way. This carbohydrate can drastically increase blood sugar levels. The name is maltodextrin,” he said.

In addition, maltodextrin also comes in other forms, such as modified food starch and modified corn starch. This ingredient is found in food, including sugar -free products that actually still contain sugar -like substances.

Maltodextrin is usually in the form of a stall white powder and found in many processed foods, including:
