Various types of chilies in the world and their spiciness scale



Jakarta (ANTARA) – Chili is a food ingredient that gives a spicy taste to dishes. Not only in Indonesia, there are also many types of chili plants in the world.

In fact, several types of chili have different levels of spiciness from hot to super hot based on the Scoville scale.

The Scoville scale itself is a scale for measuring the spiciness of capsaicin or chilies, with the unit of measurement using Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Here are several types of chilies in the world, reported by Chili Pepper Madness and various sources:

1. Jalapeño peppers

This chili comes from Mexico, has a shape similar to green chilies, but is larger in size. Jalapeno chilies are considered to be a type of chili that is quite hot, reaching a spiciness level of 8,000 on the Scoville Scale. This chili is usually used for stir-fry dishes and pasta.

2. Chili pepper

This chili, which originates from the United States, is the number 1 hottest chili in the world. Pepper This chili has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest chili in the world, with a content of 2.69 million SHU.

3. Piri piri chili

Piri piri chilies originate from Africa. This chili has a reddish orange color with thin skin. Additionally, this chili is commonly used in Portuguese chicken recipes. Piri piri chilies have a hotness scale of 60,0000 to 175,000 SHU.

4. Barrackapore 7-pot chili

This chili originates from Trinidad. This 7-Pot Barrackapore chili has spotted skin and forms a tail, the initial color is green and when ripe it becomes bright red. This chili has a spiciness scale of up to 1,000,000 SHU.

5. Shishito Chili

Shishito chilies originate from Japan and are small in size and have a mild spicy taste that tends to have a sweet taste. With a spiciness level of around 200 SHU.

6. Padron chili

Although this chili is loved in Spain, it is thought to originate from Mexico. Padro chilies are thin-skinned emerald green, and almost mildly spicy, with a spiciness level of around 500 to 1,000 SHU.

7. Aji Cito Chili

This chili comes from Peru and has a yellowish orange color, slightly like an orange. Chilies can be used in salads or salsa, and are better when dried or powdered. This chili has a spiciness level of around 80,000-100,000 SHU.

8. Anaheim Chili

This chili comes from Anaheim, California, has a mild spicy taste with a spiciness level of 500-2,500 SHU. Anaheim chilies are characterized by being medium sized, growing up to 6-10 inches in length and when ripe they are dark green/reddish in color, but there are also full red in color.

This chili is one of the most common chilies in the United States and is used in many foods and recipes.

9. Ghost pepper (bhut jolokia)

This chili, which is widely cultivated in the Northeastern region of India, was awarded as the hottest chili in the world by Guinness World Records in 2007.

Ghost peppers measure up to 3.3 inches long and are usually red in color. This chili has a spiciness level of around 1 million SHU when testing its spiciness level.

10. Aleppo Chili

Aleppo chilies, also called halaby peppers, are widely grown in Syria and Türkiye. Aleppo chilies have a medium and thick shape, the color will change to burgundy red when ripe.

Apart from being served fresh, Aleppo chilies are usually dried and coarsely ground or crushed to become chili powder. This type of chili, which is widely used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes, has a spiciness level of around 10,000 SHU.
