You’re both black coffee, what’s the difference between espresso and ristretto?


KOMPAS.com – Espresso is arguably more popular than ristretto. In fact, both are black coffee.

Espresso is often mixed with coffee and milk in many cafes. This strong coffee can also be served without added sugar or other ingredients.

Literally, espresso means concentrated coffee because it only relies on a mixture of coffee grounds and water that are extracted together.

Then, what’s the difference with ristretto?

Ristretto This is a strong coffee like espresso, but has a more liquid consistency than espresso.

“Composition ristretto it’s the same as espresso, water and coffee,” said Mikael Jasin, champion of the 2024 World Barista Championship (WBC) when met as brand ambassador DaVinci Gourmet at Omakafe, Tuesday (26/11/2024).

Ristretto it comes from Italian which means restricted “or hold it (limited), so that when (the coffee) just comes out a little (from the machine), the button is turned off,” he explained.

The result is texture risretto it is more liquid and not as thick as espresso which is known as the main ingredient in various milk coffees.

Consistency ristretto which is different from espresso, making black coffee is rarely found, especially in Indonesian coffee shops.
