KOMPAS.com – Eating whole fruit is said to be better than drinking fruit juice, including for people with diabetes.
“Juice is reduced because the juice will make a lot of fruit fiber unused or wasted, the calories will also be higher in fructose (a type of sugar often found in fruit),” explained internal medicine specialist, endocrine and metabolic consultant, Dr. Rulli Rosandi, Sp.PD-KEMD, quoted from BetweenSaturday (30/11/2024).

He said that whole fruit contains more fiber. This fiber plays an important role in regulating blood sugar levels.
The fiber in whole fruit, especially soluble fiber, can help slow the absorption of glucose in the blood, while preventing a rapid rise in blood sugar after eating.
Most of the fiber in fruit juice is gone, but the natural sugar concentration is still there. As a result, blood sugar rises more quickly after drinking juice.

Whole fruit also keeps you full longer thanks to the fiber it contains. One of the benefits is that you avoid overeating.
Sometimes fruit juice is also added with other ingredients, for example sweetened condensed, which is certainly not good for people with diabetes.

“Apart from that, juice generally doesn’t just require one fruit, there are several fruits so the calories will also be more,” said Dr. Rulli.
He advises diabetes sufferers to eat fruit whose calorie count does not exceed the daily calorie requirement limit.
