Trivial Habits That Make Soy Sauce Go Bad Quickly, Don’t Do It Again

KOMPAS.com – Soy sauce is a mandatory kitchen ingredient that is often used to cook various dishes.

Both sweet soy sauce, salty soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce, all have an important role in adding to the taste of dishes.

However, did you know that the wrong storage method can cause soy sauce to spoil more quickly and even become moldy? It turns out that some trivial habits can cause soy sauce to spoil quickly.

So that your soy sauce remains durable and of good quality, avoid the following three mistakes when storing soy sauce in the kitchen.

1. Leave the soy sauce packaging open

Soy sauce is now available in various packages, from bottles to sachets. However, if soy sauce in sachets is left open without protection, air can enter and affect the quality of the soy sauce.

In addition, open soy sauce can attract ants or other small insects, potentially causing contamination.

Solution:

  • After opening the soy sauce sachet, transfer the contents into a tight bottle.
  • If this is not possible, retie the packaging with rubber or tie straps to keep it clean.

2. Store near a heat source

Many people put soy sauce and other kitchen spices near the stove to make cooking easier. However, this is a wrong habit.

The heat from the stove fire or sunlight coming in through the kitchen window can change the composition of the soy sauce. As a result, soy sauce becomes moldy more easily and its quality decreases.

Solution:

Store soy sauce in a cool place protected from direct heat exposure, such as a kitchen cupboard or storage shelf far from the stove.

3. Not storing at the right room temperature

Soy sauce should be stored at room temperature, which is around 28-30 degrees Celsius. Soy sauce is a fermented product that actually has a fairly long shelf life, namely up to one year without needing to be put in the refrigerator.

However, if the soy sauce is left open for more than one year, it is recommended to store it in the refrigerator.

Keep in mind, storing soy sauce in the refrigerator can cause the texture to thicken, making it a little difficult to pour.

However, this change in texture does not affect the overall quality of the soy sauce.

Solution:

  • Use a storage area such as a kitchen cupboard or kitchen shelf that has a stable temperature.
  • Avoid storing soy sauce in places that are too hot or humid.
