How to store fish to keep it fresh

Here are some steps you can follow to store fish properly:

1. Clean the fish thoroughly

Before storing, make sure the fish has been cleaned well. Clean parts:

  • Fin
  • Tail
  • Scales
  • Gill
  • Stomach contents

Thorough cleaning will prevent premature spoilage and keep the fish fresh.

2. Use appropriate containers

Once the fish is clean, store it in a clean container or jar. This will help maintain cleanliness and avoid contamination with other food ingredients.

3. Don’t use salt

Do not sprinkle fish with salt before storing it. Salt can make fish turn into salted fish if stored in the refrigerator for too long.

4. Cover with lime juice

To maintain the freshness of the fish and eliminate the fishy smell, coat the fish with lime juice. In addition, close the fish container tightly to prevent air from entering.

If you don’t have a jar, cover the fish container with plastic wrap. Plastic wrap will protect the fish from exposure to air and maintain its quality.

To keep the fish frozen and odorless, store it in the freezer. You can also put it at the bottom of the freezer which is specifically designed for storing fish or meat.

7. Avoid storing on the bottom shelf

Do not store fish on the bottom shelf or basket of the refrigerator. This area is not cold enough to freeze the fish, so the fish can smell bad if stored for more than a day.
