Reporting from Mirror UK (18/12), a dietitian named Shayne Rowland often shares diet tips via his TikTok account @proflex.health.
“When we’re craving food, it’s usually because our body is sending signals to tell us that something might be missing,” explains Shayne.
“This could be a sign that the body is not getting enough sleep or rest. We know that when the body is not getting enough sleep, it will produce a hormone called ghrelin. This hormone can increase hunger hormones in the body, so that we feel hungry and crave certain foods,” said Shayne.

Shayne further added that the factor that often triggers cravings is because our body lacks fluids or is slightly dehydrated.
“Maybe we actually don’t feel hungry but just need to drink water. Because the body is even slightly dehydrated, it can be misinterpreted as hunger which then triggers food cravings,” he said.
So that cravings disappear when dieting, Shayne emphasizes the importance of consuming foods that are rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals for the body. This includes eating foods that are rich in protein so that people don’t feel hungry easily.

Food cravings can appear even though they are actually not related to food at all. So Shayne suggests getting enough rest.
“So if you experience cravings for certain foods, make sure you review these things first before deciding to eat them straight away,” he concluded.
At the end of the video, Shayne added that it’s okay to snack occasionally while on a diet as long as the portions are not excessive.
