The trend of coffee mixed with eggs in the US, is it safe to consume?


KOMPAS.com – Recently, a unique trend of mixing raw eggs into coffee went viral on TikTok and Instagram among the people of the United States (US).

Some people even put whole eggs, including the shell, in their coffee. It is said that this method is claimed to improve the taste and texture of coffee, making it softer and smoother.

However, is this trend safe to follow? The following is a complete review based on input from registered nutritionists.

Even though it sounds like a new innovation, egg coffee actually has a long history. This trend originates from Swedish immigrants who brought their traditional recipes to the US in the 19th century. In the churches they attend, this coffee is known as church basement coffee.

According to barista Jimmy Johnson (@jimmythebarista), there are two main reasons why eggs are used in coffee. First, egg yolks and whites help clarify coffee, reducing bitterness.

Second, eggshells lower the acidity level of coffee, resulting in a richer, smoother taste.

How is egg coffee made?

Jimmy Johnson explains that the process involves mixing a whole egg (including the shell) with coffee grounds and a little water, then boiling it with additional water. After that, the mixture is filtered before serving.

While the end result may sound tempting, there are health risks to consider.

According to nutritionist Veronica Rouse, consuming raw eggs and their shells can carry bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, or Campylobacter. In addition, sharp pieces of shell can injure the digestive tract.

To minimize the risk, the temperature of the coffee must reach 71 degrees Celsius to kill harmful bacteria.

Another alternative is to use pasteurized eggs, which have been heated to a certain temperature to kill bacteria without cooking the egg.

A safer alternative

For those of you who want to add protein to your coffee without risk, Rouse recommends using a high-protein milk like Fairlife or adding a protein powder like Vital Protein Collagen Peptides.

Apart from that, enjoying a high protein breakfast with a regular cup of coffee can also be a healthy choice.
