JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – If you are looking for a place to eat legendary gado-gado in Jakarta, one that you must visit is Gado-gado Boplo Cikini. The location is on Jalan Cikini Raya No. 111, Menteng District, Central Jakarta.
Established in 1970, Gado-gado Boplo started with Juliana Hartono who opened a gado-gado shop in a narrow alley in Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta.

“The Gado-gado Boplo business started in 1970 in a narrow alley in Kebon Sirih which was run by my mother, who was a single parent, and we sell by staying at grandfather’s house,” said Juliana Hartono’s son and owner of Gado-gado Boplo, Calvin Hartono during the Idepreneurs Exclusive Session, Central Jakarta, Thursday (12/12/2024).
Calvin continued, his mother started the gado-gado business with capital of IDR 500. The price per portion at that time was IDR 25.
In the 1980s, Juliana was invited by her sister to move her shop to a garage on Jalan KH Wahid Hasyim.
At that time, Juliana saw that there was a Boplo Pharmacy opposite her shop. He also took the name “Boplo” as the name of his gado-gado shop.
“Later we found out that the name Boplo is the name of a Dutch real estate company that built the Menteng area like the area in The Hague, Netherlands, which was apparently designed by a Dutchman named NV De Bouwploeg,” explained Calvin.

Cashew nuts seasoned with Gado-gado Boplo

One of the characteristics of Gado-gado Boplo is the spices. In the 1980s, one of Juliana’s stall customers brought cashew nuts when they visited the stall.
The customer asked Juliana to mix cashews with the peanut sauce. This is what inspired Juliana to add cashews to her gado-gado peanut sauce recipe.
“Because the addition of cashews to the peanut sauce makes the gado-gado taste more delicious and delicious, in the end lots of customers come,” said Calvin.

Furthermore, in 2004, Gado-gado Boplo was collaborated by an investor who wanted to turn the gado-gado stall into a restaurant in Barito, South Jakarta.
To date, Gado-gado Boplo has 17 branches and all of them are managed by the Calvin family. In Cikini, Gado-gado Boplo is open every day from 08.00 WIB to 21.30 WIB.
Apart from that, Gado-gado Boplo is also innovating to stay afloat in the food industry, one of which is by releasing instant gado-gado seasoning in 2020.
