The meaning of a basket cake during Chinese New Year, not just a symbol of luck


KOMPAS.com – Basket cakes include typical Chinese New Year foods that are usually sold in thick round shapes. The meaning of basket cake is not only related to luck, but also hopes for the new year.

Reported from China HighlightsTuesday (1/28/2025), basket cakes are called Nian Gao In Chinese. Say Nian meaning year, whereas Gao meaning cake.

This legit food is a symbol of expectations for higher income, higher positions, and better children’s development next year.

There are various versions of the origin of basket cakes. One version states, basket cakes are believed to be made as offerings for kitchen gods (Kitchen God).

In that version, the kitchen god is believed to reside in every house. According to folklore, every year the year of the kitchen god will make a “annual report” to the Jade Emperor (Jade Emperor).

So that the kitchen god does not report bad things to the Emperor of Jade, people then offer a basket cake that is considered to be “closing his mouth”. So from that, basket cakes are usually described before Chinese New Year.

Not only that, there is also a version that connects a basket cake with a giant monster named Nian.

Reported from Atlas Obscurait is called a monster named Nian who often terrorizes villagers in winter. Nian is described as having sharp teeth, horns, and body like dogs.

Finally there was a family named Gao who fought Nian by giving him a cake and using firecrackers.

Nian was happy with the dessert, then returned to the mountains with a full stomach and left the villagers peacefully.
