The history of Bakmi GM, starting from Bakmi Gajah Mada

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Bakmi GM, formerly known as Bakmi Gajah Mada, is one of the most popular noodle restaurants in Indonesia.

This story begins in 1959, when a husband and wife couple, Tjhai Sioe and Loei Kwai Fong, founded a small restaurant in the Gajah Mada area, Jakarta.

Quoted from the official Bakmi GM website, the name “Gajah Mada” was chosen to represent the initial location of this restaurant.

In the beginning, Bakmi Gajah Mada was a simple business that focused on serving noodles that attracted the attention of the local community.

With increasing demand, in 1971, the first branch was opened in the Melawai area, South Jakarta.

This expansion is an important milestone in Bakmi GM’s journey to become a large restaurant chain.
