Tender, Delicious and Simple Beef Rendang Recipe

The savory and spicy taste of tender meat that melts on the tongue has made beef rendang one of the most famous Indonesian specialties in the world. It was even later named the most delicious food in the world.

Starting in 2011, CNNGo.com conducted a survey “The World’s 50 Most Delicious Food” via its Facebook account. This survey ranked rendang followed by fried rice as the most delicious food in the world.

At that time, the foreword on the CNNGo.com page described rendang as a spicy and gingery meat dish. In 2017, rendang was again ranked first in the world’s most delicious food according to CNN Travel.

This dish has become even more famous since famous chef Gordon Ramsay went viral cooking rendang accompanied by Indonesian culinary expert, William Wongso. Ramsay cooked on the National Geographic Uncharted program, which aired last Monday (29/6/2020).

Usually dry rendang is typical of Minangkabau or Padang rendang. Their rendang is pitch black, dry and oily. Meanwhile, for the Javanese meat recipe, the meat is wet. Their rendang is a bit brown and the meat still seems tough. The tip for cooking tender rendang is actually don’t cook it using high heat. Cook on low heat for several hours. For dry rendang, cook rendang for 5-6 hours. For wet rendang, cook for about 4 hours.

How to make :
  1. Puree all the seasoning ingredients by grinding or blending.

  2. Saute the spices in a little cooking oil until fragrant.
  3. Add the lemongrass stalks, lime leaves, kandis acid and salt, stir well.
  4. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to a boil, add the meat.
  5. Cook over low heat for several hours until the meat is tender and browned to taste.
