This seasoned bamboo satay is not the only unique culinary that appears in China.
In June 2023, a seller in Hunan introduced a “spicy stone” dish, a small river stone sauteed with chili, garlic, perilla leaves, and rosemary. The dish, known as the local name Suo Diu, comes from the traditions of the fishermen in the Yangtze river that sucks the spices from the stone before throwing it away.
In addition, in the summer in the province of Jiangxi, Southeast China, some traders offer “grilled ice”, which is an ice beam that is roasted and seasoned with cumin, chili, and pepper to provide a sensation of cold and spicy taste in one bite.
