Spicy Fish Tofu Pepes Recipe, Healthy Side Dish Idea Without Oil


KOMPAS.com – Spicy fish tofu sauce is a healthy and delicious side dish option that can be an alternative lunch menu without oil.

This combination of fish fillet, white tofu and young coconut is not only low in calories, but also rich in taste. If you like it spicy, add cayenne pepper to taste into the mixture before steaming.

Ingredients for Spicy Fish Tofu Pepes:

  • 200 grams of fish fillet
  • 400 grams white tofu (Chinese tofu)
  • 2 tablespoons grated young coconut (half old coconut)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 lime leaf (remove the bone and finely slice)
  • Whole red bird’s eye chilies (to taste)
  • Banana leaves for wrapping pepes

Ground spices:

  • 4 red onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 4 curly red chilies
  • 2 centimeters roasted turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste

1. Puree the fish meat then stir with tofu, young coconut, eggs, ground spices and lime leaves until evenly mixed.

2. Prepare the banana leaves then put one tablespoon of the mixture into the banana leaves. Add one cayenne pepper on top, then wrap the mixture in banana leaves.

3. Do the same steps until the mixture is finished, then steam the mixture in a boiling steamer for about 45 minutes or until the tofu mixture is cooked.

4. Continue grilling the tofu pepes over hot coals until the wrapping leaves are browned. After that, remove from heat and serve while warm.
