Som Tam Recipe, Typical Thai Young Papaya Salad


KOMPAS.com – Som Tam, or Thai raw papaya salad, is a fresh dish that is popular all over the world.

This dish is known for its perfectly blended sour, spicy, sweet and salty flavors, making it a refreshing and delicious choice to eat at any time of the day.

Made from thinly sliced ​​young papaya, Som Tam is usually served with roasted peanuts, cherry tomatoes and a special sauce made from a mixture of lime juice, chili and fish sauce.

  • 350 grams raw papaya, peeled, thinly sliced
  • 50 grams of carrots, peeled, cut into long thin slices
  • 10 long beans, chopped
  • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 50 grams of dried shrimp, soak briefly, drain

Som Tam Sauce Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 5 cayenne peppers, coarsely crushed

Sprinkles

  • 2 tbsp fried peanuts
  • 1 tbsp dried shrimp

How to make som tam

  1. Peel and slice the papaya and carrots until thin. Set aside in a large container.
  2. Puree the garlic and cayenne pepper coarsely in a mortar, add brown sugar, lime juice and fish sauce. Stir until the spices are evenly mixed.
  3. Mix the spices into the papaya and carrots, add the tomatoes, long beans and dried shrimp. Stir until all the ingredients are mixed with the sauce.
  4. Serve the salad on a plate, sprinkle with fried peanuts and dried shrimp as a complement.
  5. Enjoy this Thai raw papaya salad with white rice or as an appetizer.
