Jakarta –
Drinking coffee in the morning is called healthier and can make people live long. This was found in the latest coffee research.
A recent study published in the European Heart Journal found that people who drink coffee, especially in the morning have a lower risk of death, especially from heart disease, compared to those who drink coffee throughout the day or do not drink coffee at all.
This finding shows that not only the amount of coffee drunk, but also the time of consumption, which can affect long -term health.

Some studies on previous coffee consumption have indeed shown that drinking coffee in moderate amounts is beneficial for health, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and death.
However, the results are not always consistent, especially for those who drink large amounts of coffee. Researchers suspect that differences in drinking habits, such as drinking coffee time, might be the cause of these differences. From this, the idea emerged to examine the relationship between drinking time and its effects on health.

This research was led by Lu Qi, as the Interim Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Tulane University, New Orleans, United States. They analyze data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United States. This study includes more than 40,000 adults between 1999 and 2018.
Participants are asked to remember the food and drinks they consume for 24 hours, including drinking coffee. The results show two main groups, namely people who drink coffee in the morning (between 4 o’clock in the morning) and those who consume coffee throughout the day. There are also other groups consisting of people who don’t drink coffee at all.
Researchers found that people who drink coffee in the morning have a lower risk of death compared to those who don’t drink coffee. Coffee drinkers in the morning 16% are less likely to die during the study period, while the risk of death from heart disease decreases by 31%.

Conversely, people who drink coffee throughout the day do not show a significant reduction in risk compared to those who do not drink coffee.
The benefits of drinking more coffee are only seen in groups who drink coffee in the morning. In this group, the more coffee consumed, the lower the risk of death. However, in those who drink coffee throughout the day, the amount of coffee taken does not have a clear relationship with health risks.
“Drinking coffee can affect the habits of circadian rhythm, such as sleep, as well as hormones such as melatonin and cortisol, which play an important role in health. Therefore, coffee drinking time can affect overall health,” Lu Qi said in his interview with Psypost (29/03).
The researchers suspect that drinking coffee in the morning is more useful because coffee can affect the rhythm of the body and hormones related to sleep like melatonin. Meanwhile drinking coffee in the afternoon or at night can interfere with the sleep cycle and increase the risk of heart disease.

Although this research is observational and cannot prove the causal relationship (causal), the results provide a new view of the importance of coffee consumption time for long-term health.
Of course, it takes further research that can analyze and research further about how coffee drinking time affects overall health “We hope to test the causal effects of drinking coffee on human health in the clinical test in the future,” said Lu Qi.
