Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — The Florida Ministry of Health, United States, stated that a rare bacteria found in sea water had killed two people. Meanwhile, seven other people were infected with the same bacteria. As reported by TIME, the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria can be spread through direct contact of sea water with wounds. Eating raw shellfish can also be one of the causes.
According to Florida Ministry of Health spokesperson, Mara Burger, if the bacteria is swallowed, symptoms of illness will appear such as stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. If the bacteria enters through the skin, it can cause infection and bisyl.
These symptoms are actually not that dangerous for healthy people. Most cases can be treated simply by taking antibiotics.
However, this bacteria can have a fatal impact on people who have a poor body defense system.
To avoid the dangers of these bacteria, the Florida Ministry of Health recommends that residents cook shellfish until cooked before consuming them. Residents are also expected not to play in the sea if they are injured.
