Pineapples can make your tongue itchy, here’s how to deal with it


KOMPAS.com – Pineapple is a fresh fruit and rich in nutrients. However, for some people, consuming it can cause an itchy feeling on the tongue. In fact, there are also those who experience allergic reactions to this tropical fruit.

However, you don’t need to worry. Here are some simple ways to prevent and reduce itching after consuming pineapple.

Why does pineapple cause itching?

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which functions to break down protein.

This bromelain can also cause itching or burning on the tongue because it “erodes” the thin layer in the mouth.

In addition, pineapple contains oxalate crystals, which can also cause an uncomfortable sensation on the tongue and mouth.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy pineapple. There are several tricks you can do to overcome this itching.

How to prevent itching when eating pineapple

According to Sheehan, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology who specializes in plant irritant allergies from Indiana University School of Medicine, there are two quite effective ways to reduce the stinging sensation when consuming pineapple:

1. Cook the pineapple to a temperature of 57 degrees Celsius

Cooking pineapple until it reaches a temperature of 135°F or around 57°C can kill the bromelain enzyme that causes the burning taste on the tongue.

You can grill pineapple at a BBQ or bake it into cakes or muffins. In this way, the bromelain will be broken down and the itching will decrease or even disappear.

2. Combine pineapple with dairy products

Consuming pineapple with dairy products, such as yogurt, ice cream, or milk, can also help.

The bromelain in pineapple will focus on the whey protein and casein present in dairy products, not on the tissues in your mouth.

Apart from that, dairy products also help neutralize the pH in the mouth, thereby reducing the stinging feeling.

3. Additional tips from Indonesia: Add salt

In Indonesia, adding a little salt to pineapple before consuming it is also believed to help reduce itching.

Salt is believed to be able to neutralize the effects of bromelain and make pineapple feel more comfortable to consume.
