Minister of Culture: Registration of rendang with UNESCO for global recognition

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Culture (Menbud) Fadli Zon expressed the importance of registering rendang dishes with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the aim of gaining global recognition as world cultural heritage.

“Rendang is one of our culinary delights that is known worldwide, even Gordon Ramsay came to West Sumatra to learn rendang,” said Fadli Zon in Jakarta, Monday.

Fadli Zon said that the effort to register rendang with UNESCO has great urgency to provide global recognition for Indonesia’s culinary riches, especially rendang which is a traditional dish from Minangkabau.

According to him, rendang is not just a delicious dish, but also has high cultural value and is a symbol of Indonesia’s culinary identity.

By registering rendang with UNESCO, he hopes that this dish can be protected and preserved, as well as introducing Indonesia’s culinary riches to the international stage.

Furthermore, Fadli Zon sees the registration of rendang as a world cultural heritage as a strategic step to encourage the tourism sector and the Indonesian economy.

It is believed that increasing interest in local culture, including traditional culinary delights, can increase tourist visits and introduce local products that support the Indonesian economy.

“UNESCO’s recognition of rendang will also strengthen Indonesia’s position on the international stage, as a country with a rich and diverse cultural heritage,” he said.

It is known that rendang itself is widely known throughout the world, and has even been chosen as one of the most delicious dishes in the world.

It is hoped that this registration will have a greater positive impact, not only for cultural preservation, but also for the development of other sectors related to Indonesian culture and tourism.

Furthermore, Fadli has not confirmed whether rendang will be registered specifically with UNESCO, or together with other cultural heritage applications.

Indonesia, with all its cultural diversity and traditions, has received international recognition through cultural heritage recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), including wayang arts, keris and batik.

“We’ll see if this is what it is single proposal or join (with others), we will see,” he said.
