KPU Finds Out Why Participation in Regional Elections in Denpasar is Only 59.5 Percent

Denpasar

The Denpasar City General Election Commission (KPU) will find out why voter participation for the 2024 Pilkada in Denpasar is the lowest in Bali, only 59.5 percent. This is done by survey or research.

“We will conduct a survey or research with the campus to evaluate why the participation rate in Denpasar City is below 60 percent. It has not achieved the national target of 81 percent or the Bali KPU target of 75 percent,” said Denpasar City KPU Chairperson Dewa Ayu Sekar Anggaraeni during the open plenary recapitulation of the 2024 Pilkada votes in Denpasar, Wednesday (4/12/2024).

The number of permanent voter lists (DPT) in Denpasar is 507,561 people. Meanwhile, voter participation in the 2024 Bali gubernatorial election was 59.55 percent and the Denpasar regional election was 59.53 percent. The KPU recorded that the number of voters who did not exercise their rights was around 40 percent.

“If we reflect on the previous regional elections, when we conducted a survey or research in collaboration with the campus, the reason why they didn’t come first was because they were working, even though it was a closed day. There are still public services or companies whose employees have to come in on that day,” explained Sekar.

Apart from that, there are also voters who think one of the candidate pairs has won even though they didn’t show up. Then, there are also those who argue that whichever candidate pair becomes regional leader has no influence on their level of welfare.

The KPU also looked at other reasons, namely the large number of people who changed their domicile. As a result, the C-Notification document was not received by the person registered at that address.

“The highest level of participation (of voters during the regional elections) was in East Denpasar 63 percent, North Denpasar 62 percent, West Denpasar 58 percent, and the lowest was in South Denpasar 56 percent,” explained Sekar in detail.

If you look at the population map, South Denpasar and West Denpasar have a large number of migrant residents compared to other sub-districts. Sekar concluded that this was one of the reasons why this sub-district was a sub-district with low voter participation.

“From year to year, East Denpasar has the highest participation rate in elections and local elections. Then, it was followed by North Denpasar, West Denpasar and South Denpasar and now (in the 2024 regional elections) it is repeating itself,” he said.
