Karangasem –
The number of white groups (abstentions) or people who did not exercise their right to vote in the 2024 Karangasem regional elections reached 106,703 people or 27.1 percent. The number of abstentions was greater than the votes obtained by candidate pairs (paslon) I Wayan Kari Subali-I Ketut Putra Ismaya Jaya (Karisma) who received 38,241 votes and I Gede Dana-I Nengah Swadi (Dana-Swadi) who received 91,448 votes.
Division of Socialization, Voter Education, Community Participation and Human Resources (HR) of the Karangasem Regency General Election Commission (KPU), I Kadek Sukara, said there were several factors that influenced the high number of abstentions in the Karangasem Pilkada. “One of them is because quite a lot of voters live outside Karangasem because they work, so that is quite crucial,” said Sukara, Thursday (05/12/2024).
Apart from that, boredom was also a factor because the election process was held in the same year. Bearing in mind that previously in February 2024 legislative elections (pileg) and presidential elections (pilpres) were also held.
Nevertheless, Sukara said that voter participation in the 2024 Karangasem Regional Election had increased compared to the 2020 Karangasem Regional Election. Although it still failed to reach the target given by the Provincial KPU.
“We have done our best to provide outreach to the community to come vote together with organizers at both the sub-district and village levels,” said Sukara.
