This effect is said to only be effective when coffee is drunk as is, without added sweeteners. So, what if coffee is added with spices, such as cinnamon?
The reason is, a trend emerged on TikTok which claims that drinking coffee for one week with the addition of a teaspoon of cinnamon can help burn fat. Is this claim true? Launching theconversation.com (10/10/2024), here is the explanation.

There are several types of cinnamon that may contain natural active ingredients. Two of them are cassia and ceylon cinnamon.
Cassia type cinnamon is the most common and is often found in cinnamon products sold in supermarkets. It has a bitter taste and contains cinnamaldehyde, a high active ingredient. About 95% of Cassia cinnamon contains this compound. This compound gives cinnamon its taste and aroma.
Another type of cinnamon is Ceylon which tastes sweeter. This cinnamon contains around 50-60% cinnamaldehyde, which is an active compound that has functional properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

According to a study called The Conversation, a review of 35 studies looked at whether cinnamon can affect waist circumference.
It was found that a dose of cinnamon under 1.5 grams per day (about half a teaspoon) could reduce waist circumference by up to 1.68 cm. However, consuming more than 1.5 grams per day has no significant effect.
A meta-analysis of 21 clinical trials with a total of 1,480 participants found that cinnamon also reduced body mass index by 0.40 kg/square meter and body weight by 0.92 kg. However, this did not change participants’ fat composition or fat-free muscle mass.
Another comprehensive review that included all meta-analyses found little effect of cinnamon on weight loss.
The participants lost an average of 0.67 kilograms in weight, and their mass index was 0.45 kilograms.
Overall the weight loss seen in this study was very small, ranging from two to six months and most experienced no change in body composition.
The study also involved people with various diseases, so it is not yet certain what the effects would be on people with other health profiles.
