How to Store Leeks so They Don’t Dry Quickly

KOMPAS.com – Leeks are a kitchen ingredient that is often used as a mixture in various dishes such as soup, soup or chicken noodles.

Apart from that, spring onions can also be used as a topping to enrich the taste and appearance of food. Because they are often used in cooking, many people buy leeks in large quantities.

To keep leeks fresh and not dry quickly, store them in the right way. Following are some easy steps you can follow:

1. Cut the roots

The first step is to cut the roots of the leeks. This part is usually still there when we buy leeks.

Cut these roots off before storing them, and if you wish, these root sections can be replanted to produce new leeks.

2. Cut into two parts

After cutting the roots, divide the leeks into two parts, namely the stem and the leaves. Separating the stems and leaves helps keep the leeks fresher for longer.

3. Dry the spring onions

Before storing, dry the leeks using paper towels. This step is important to reduce excess moisture which can cause leeks to rot quickly. Dry gently so that the leeks remain intact and fresh.

4. Wrap in kitchen tissue

Once dry, wrap the leeks using kitchen tissue. Prepare about 2-3 sheets of tissue to wrap several spring onions at once.

If you have a lot of leeks, it’s best to divide them into several pieces and avoid wrapping them too tightly so as not to damage the texture of the leeks.

5. Put it in plastic

After wrapping it in tissue, put the leeks in plastic. As an additional tip, write the storage date on the plastic so you can estimate the freshness of the leeks. Store the plastic containing the leeks in the refrigerator.

6. Return the leeks that have been used

If you only need some of the leeks, take enough, and re-wrap the remaining leeks in tissue before placing them in plastic storage in the refrigerator. This helps maintain the freshness of the remaining leeks.
