How to Easily Remove Milkfish Bones


KOMPAS.com – Who can resist the delicious pindang milkfish served on the dinner table? Milkfish is a favorite of many people, and is even a mainstay menu in Chinese New Year celebrations.

However, processing milkfish is not an easy matter. Apart from the meat being easily destroyed if cooked incorrectly, the small bones often make many people reluctant to process it.

The following are easy steps that you can try at home. Even for those who are just starting to cook, this method is quite simple to do:

1. Prepare three tools

You only need three easy-to-find tools:

  • knife
  • meat beater
  • rolling pin

2. Clean the milkfish

Before starting, clean the milkfish from its scales. After that, wash the fish carefully to ensure it is clean. This step is important to maintain the quality of the taste and cleanliness of the fish meat.

3. Starting from the tail

The next step is to break the tail of the milkfish. This method will make the process of removing the bone easier at a later stage.

4. Beat the milkfish meat with a meat beater

Use a meat mallet to pound the body of the milkfish. This step aims to loosen the meat from the bones so that it is easier to remove.

5. Pull the bones from the gills

After that, pull the milkfish bones out through the gills. Do this process carefully so that the fish flesh remains intact.

6. Push gently with rolling pin

At the final stage, use rolling pin to push the fish meat slowly. Start at the tail and push towards the head. This way, the small bones will separate from the meat without breaking it apart.

During this process, make sure you do it carefully so that your hands don’t hurt and the fish flesh remains intact.
