How to Differentiate between Fresh Eggs and Rotten Eggs, Don’t Make the Wrong Choice

KOMPAS.com – Eggs are a food ingredient that is widely used for various dishes, but it is important to ensure that the eggs consumed are fresh.

Rotten or unfit for consumption eggs can be dangerous to your health, and it is often difficult to differentiate between fresh and rotten eggs just from their external appearance.

Here are some simple ways to check the quality of eggs without having to break them:

1. Soak in water

The first method you can try is soaking the eggs in a bowl or basin filled with room temperature water. The following results can be used as a reference:

  • Sinks and sleeping positions:

If the egg sinks and lies at the bottom of the container, the egg is still fresh.

Eggs that sink but are slightly tilted indicate that the eggs have been stored for about 3-5 days, but are still safe for consumption.

  • Drowning in a Standing Position:

If the eggs are standing in water, they have likely been stored for more than 10 days. Even though it is still safe, it is best to use it immediately.

If the egg floats, it is a sign that the egg is rotten and should not be consumed.

2. Highlight it with lights

The next way is to examine the eggs under light, such as a flashlight or lamp. When highlighted:

If the shadow in the egg appears bright and clear, it means the egg is still fresh.

Eggs that look blurry or dull when highlighted indicate that they are no longer fresh.

3. Smell the eggs

Another way to do this is to smell the egg, especially when it has been cracked. These scent differences are helpful in distinguishing between fresh and rotten eggs:

Fresh eggs do not have a strong fishy or rotten odor. If there is a very faint aroma, it is usually within safe limits.

Rotten eggs have a strong, rotten odor and are very unpleasant. If you smell this aroma, throw the egg away immediately.

4. Check the contents of the egg after breaking it

If you have cracked an egg, look at the yolk and white:

  • Perfectly round egg yolk:

Fresh eggs have perfectly round and upright yolks. The egg white (albumin) looks thick and viscous.

  • Egg yolk sags slightly:

Eggs that have been stored for a while are still suitable for consumption if the yolk begins to sag and the albumin becomes more transparent.
