KOMPAS.com – Gayo coffee, which comes from Aceh, is included in the list of the top 10 best coffee beans in the world according to TasteAtlas.
TasteAtlas is an encyclopedia of taste, a world atlas containing traditional dishes, local ingredients and authentic restaurants, and has cataloged more than 10,000 foods and drinks.
Gayo coffee ranks 8th on this list, after Café de Colombia from Colombia, Arabica from Ethiopia, Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee from Jamaica, Robusta from Congo, Kafae Doi Chaang from Thailand, Valdesia coffee from Dominica, and Huehuetenango Highland Coffee from Guatemala .

The other two coffee beans on this top 10 list are Harenna forest wild coffee from Ethiopia and Kafae Doi Tung from Thailand.
According to Fanny Al Hady, a barista course instructor at the lImcom Course and Training Institute (LKP), Banda Aceh, as reported on the website of the Director General of Vocational Education, Gayo coffee has distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from other regional coffees.
Based on his long experience as a barista, Hady explained that this coffee offers a balanced sour taste, accompanied by a touch of fruity sweetness, and a strong aroma.
Apart from that, some Gayo coffee varieties even have traces of chocolate and spice flavors which make them even more special.
Typical characteristics of Gayo coffee
Gayo coffee generally comes from the Arabica variety which is grown at an altitude of around 1,600 meters above sea level (masl).
However, robusta types can also be found in the lowlands of this region. The processing and brewing process for Gayo coffee is very diverse.

At the local level, this coffee is often enjoyed in the form of traditionally brewed ground coffee. Meanwhile, in modern cafes, Gayo coffee is often served using techniques such as manual brew or espresso.
Gayo coffee is more than just a commodity
For the Gayo people, coffee is not just a crop, but also part of their culture and identity.
The Gayo coffee industry contributes greatly to the regional economy, creating jobs and improving the welfare of local communities.
Many Gayo coffee farmers belong to cooperatives, which helps them get fairer prices and access to international markets.
Not only that, Gayo coffee has also become a symbol of education and vocational training. Course and Training Institutions (LKP) in the barista and hospitality sectors have also introduced Gayo coffee as an educational material.
