Fried Onions Are the World’s Best Condiment According to Taste Atlas


KOMPAS.com – Fried onions from Indonesia have been named the best food condiment in the world according to Taste Atlas 2024.

“Fried shallots are a traditional Indonesian spice. This spice is made by frying thinly sliced ​​shallots in oil until the shallots become crispy and golden,” quoted from the page Taste AtlasMonday (23/12/2024).

Condiments are food additives that are usually used in small quantities and have a distinctive taste and aroma.

Fried onions are described as a condiment with a bitter and savory taste. Once cooked, fried onions are usually stored in an airtight jar to keep them crunchy.

Usually fried onions are eaten by sprinkling them on various Indonesian foods. Among them as a condiment for chicken satay, fried rice, meatballs, stews and oxtail soup.

“Fried onions can be purchased at most supermarkets and grocery stores in Indonesia,” he said.

Apart from fried onions, a condiment from Indonesia which is also included in the best condiment category according to Taste Atlas is sweet soy sauce.

“This type of soy sauce is very aromatic and is sweetened with palm sugar. The color is darker than regular soy sauce, the texture is thick like syrup, and the sweet taste has a slight aroma of molasses, caramel and butterscotch,” quoted from the Taste Atlas page, Monday.

As further explained, sweet soy sauce is also often enriched with various spices such as cloves, coriander, cinnamon, star anise and black pepper.

In Indonesia, sweet soy sauce is the most popular type of soy sauce. Typically, sweet soy sauce is added to dishes such as fried rice, ketoprak, soy sauce chicken, and beef stew.
