Mealtime is not just a matter of filling your stomach. Recent research shows that eating after 17.00 has a negative impact on health.
For decades, doctors have warned people who want to lose weight to avoid eating after sunset. Apparently this is not just a suggestion.
Recently the latest research from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and Columbia University. Reporting from DailyMailUK (22/11), this research discusses the effects of eating after 5 pm on a person’s body.

This research reveals that eating at least 45% of your daily calorie intake at 5 pm can inhibit the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.
Apart from that, eating late at night can increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes. Therefore, these researchers see that the intermittent fasting diet, which limits people to eating in the afternoon and evening, is quite good.
Most people who engage in intermittent fasting consume most of their calories early in the day. Temporarily stop eating in the afternoon.
“The body’s ability to carry out glucose metabolism is limited at night. This is because insulin secretion is reduced, and the sensitivity of our cells to this hormone decreases due to the circadian rhythm,” explained Dr Diana Díaz Rizzolo as one of the researchers.

The research, published in ‘Nutrition and Diabetes’, involved 26 people aged 50 to 75 years who were overweight or obese. As well as experiencing symptoms of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
This group of people is divided into two groups: early eaters and late eaters. They eat the same foods and the same number of calories, just at different times.
Those who ate more after 5 p.m. had higher glucose levels after a glucose test. This indicates poorer glucose tolerance.
Meanwhile intermittent fasting has been shown to significantly increase the body’s ability to use glucose from food effectively. As well as using insulin to manage blood sugar levels. Because most people who do intermittent fasting usually don’t eat dinner.

By limiting eating times and extending periods without food, the body can process glucose better and more efficiently.
Researchers added that the foods usually eaten at night are more calorie dense and mostly processed foods.
“These two things may explain why eating late at night is often associated with greater body weight and fat mass,” said Dr. Diaz.
The bad effects of dinner were also explained in another study conducted by Harvard. Most people who are used to eating at night their bodies burn calories at a slower rate.
This factor then encourages the body to store fat and reduces fat breakdown, which can cause fat growth in the body.
At the end of the study, experts suggested that people stop eating before 5 pm so that the body can digest calories to glucose more effectively.
