Drinking tea after eating spicy food can actually cause various disturbing symptoms. Therefore, this combination needs to be avoided.

According to the Times of India (05/12/2024), here are the reasons why you need to avoid drinking tea when eating spicy food.

1. Trigger stomach acid to rise and heartburn

Spicy foods are known to trigger acid reflux and pain in the chest or throat in some people.

Black tea mainly contains tannins, in the form of polyphenols which can irritate the stomach lining. When taken together with spicy food, it can make stomach irritation worse and increase acid reflux.

The tannin content can also increase stomach acid production, making the stomach feel uncomfortable and worse.

2. Causes stomach irritation

Almost all teas, such as black tea and green tea contain caffeine which can irritate the digestive system.

The caffeine in tea can also increase the production of stomach acid in the stomach, which, if combined with spicy food, can get worse.

The reason is, spicy spices, such as chilies, contain the compound capsaicin. When consumed in excess it can irritate the stomach.

Then, when caffeine mixes with capsaicin, it can produce more stomach acid in the stomach and make the digestive system more sensitive.

Those with sensitive stomachs or who are prone to stomach ulcers may find their condition worse if they drink tea while eating spicy food. Starting from causing flatulence, cramps and discomfort.

If you want to continue drinking tea and avoid the effects of caffeine, you can choose herbal tea blends.
