Muscat grape cultivation techniques, especially Shine Muscat, have developed into an art of their own in Japan. Shine Muscat is known for its sweet taste, aroma, and crunchy texture, making it one of the luxurious fruits.
The grape cultivation process requires a lot of attention and involves various techniques to produce high-quality fruit.
In Yamanashi Prefecture, Keisuke Maruyama, a third-generation grape farmer, explains the importance of the natural environment in cultivating Shine Muscat grapes.
Kofu Basin, where the plantation is located, offers fertile, well-drained soil, significant day-night temperature differences, and abundant sunlight. These factors play a role in increasing the sugar concentration in the fruit, creating a characteristic sweet taste.
Additionally, Maruyama and his team employ careful pruning methods to ensure uniform fruit size and an attractive appearance.
A bunch of Shine Muscat can have up to 100 grapes which will be reduced to around 30 two months before harvest. This method allows each grape to grow large and receive maximum nutrition.
Cultivating Shine Muscat also utilizes a unique packaging technique. Each bunch of grapes is wrapped in a waterproof lined paper bag. K
These pockets protect the fruit from pests, pesticides, and help maintain the distinctive green-yellow color of the skin. This process extends the shelf life and maintains the quality of the wine until it is ready to be shipped.
Environmentally friendly technology is also adopted in cultivating Shine Muscat. At Okaki Farm, for example, farmers use solar panels to provide energy for the greenhouse.
In addition to reducing the use of fossil fuels, these panels also protect plants from rain and regulate temperature, creating ideal conditions for grape growth.
With the innovation and dedication of its farmers, Shine Muscat has become a symbol of quality and luxury in Japan and the world.
This meticulous cultivation allows consumers to enjoy grapes of the highest taste and quality all year round, making Shine Muscat an exclusive and sought-after fruit.
