Bung Hatta’s Healthy Inspiration, Son of Minang But Rarely Eats Rendang

Jakarta

Mohammad Hatta, or known as Bung Hatta, apparently regularly lived a healthy lifestyle throughout his life. One of the proclaimers of Indonesian independence did not carelessly choose the food he would consume.

This story was told by Bung Hatta’s second daughter, Gemala Rabi’ah Hatta. Gemala said that even though Bung Hatta was a native Minang figure, his father rarely consumed rendang.

“Even though he (Bung Hatta) is from Minang, we rarely eat rendang at home, unless it’s given to us,” said Gemala at Tanah Kusir TPU, South Jakarta, Tuesday (5/11/2024).

Gemala said that her father ate steamed foods every day, such as tempeh and bacem tofu. Apart from that, at the dinner table, continued Gemala, there must always be vegetables.

“There are lots of vegetables. Every day you have to have bitter melon,” explained Gemala.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) through the Prof Dr Dr Mahar Mardjono National Brain Center Hospital, Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital, and Dr Drs M Hatta Bukittinggi Brain Hospital held a flower sowing event at the Tanah Kusir public cemetery (TPU), South Jakarta on Tuesday (5/11/2024). This flower scattering event was held at the graves of Bung Hatta, Dr. Soeharto Heerdjan SpKJ, and Prof. Dr. H Mahar Mardjono.Laying flowers at Bung Hatta’s grave at Tanah Kusir Cemetery, South Jakarta, Tuesday (5/11/2024).. This healthy lifestyle, continued Gemala, is an effort made by the proclaimer to prevent undesirable events related to health.

“My father happens to really take care of (his health), because prevention is better than having to treat it later,” said Gemala.

“So pay attention to your sugar levels, how your blood pressure is, because if your blood pressure is high it can spread everywhere. Don’t eat fried food too often, our people really like eating fried food,” he concluded.

For information, Bung Hatta’s grave at Tanah Kusir TPU is one of the graves visited at the flower-laying event to welcome the 60th National Health Day (HKN) on Tuesday (5/11/2024). This flower sowing event was held by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) through the Prof Dr Dr Mahar Mardjono National Brain Center Hospital, Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital, and DR Drs M Hatta Bukittinggi Brain Hospital.

Apart from Bung Hatta’s grave, flower laying at the Tanah Kusir TPU was also carried out at the graves of two other national health figures, namely Dr. Soeharto Heerdjan SpKJ, and Prof. Dr. H Mahar Mardjono. Their respective names were immortalized as the names of the Mental Hospital (RSJ) in the Grogol area, West Jakarta, and the National Brain Center Hospital (RSPON) in Cawang, East Jakarta.
