Dr. Anh Le, a pediatrician at One Medical California, United States, explained that the benefits of consuming boba drinks are very minimal. Therefore, it is best not to consume boba drinks too often.

“Drinks with high sugar levels are unhealthy for children because they can cause excessive weight gain and can later increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes,” explained Dr. Anh Le.

“These drinks can also increase the risk of cavities,” he added.

This effect is because 1 glass of boba drink (480 grams) contains almost 40 grams of sugar. The amount is almost similar to the sugar content in soft drinks (52 grams) and orange juice (42 grams).

2. Caffeine content of Boba drinks

Apart from the sugar content, Dr. Le also asked parents to pay attention to the amount of caffeine contained in boba drinks. He said, “Caffeine has the risk of disrupting sleep, increasing irritability, and affecting concentration.”

The caffeine content in these boba drinks varies, because it is differentiated from various types of tea. “Depending on the type of tea used, the amount of caffeine in boba drinks varies between 30-50 mg,” said Dr. Le.

Meanwhile, there are regulations regarding caffeine intake in children and adolescents. The safe amount of caffeine for them is 75-100 mg of caffeine per day.
