Jakarta

The habit of drinking coffee can harm the heart. This is triggered by excessive daily caffeine intake. This is what researchers say and suggest safe daily coffee consumption.

Consuming coffee is known for its healthy benefits, such as increasing focus and helping burn fat. However, there are also coffee consumption habits that are harmful to the heart.

A recent study presented at ACC Asia in August 2024 found that drinking large amounts of caffeinated coffee five days a week can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease. Risks can still arise even if someone has a healthy body.

The scientists collected information about their normal daily caffeine intake.

“Regular caffeine consumption can disrupt the parasympathetic system leading to increased blood pressure and heart rate,” said lead study author Nency Kagathara.

In this study, researchers defined chronic caffeine consumption as consuming excessive amounts of caffeinated drinks five days a week, for more than a year.

At the end of the study, they found that 19.6 percent of participants consumed more than 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine daily. This figure is equivalent to 32 grams (g) or 6 tablespoons (tbsp) of coffee grounds.

As a result, scientists found that chronic daily caffeine intake impacts the autonomic nervous system causing an increase in heart rate and blood pressure over time.

“Because of its effects on the autonomic nervous system, consume caffeine [berlebih] “regularly can put healthy people at risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular events,” said Kagathara.

The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) itself has linked consumption of 400 mg of caffeine per day to health problems. The FDA has also warned that each person reacts and metabolizes caffeine in different ways.

Previously, research has also found that consuming more than 400 mg of caffeine a day can cause anxiety and insomnia problems.
