Be careful! Consuming these 3 vegetables can increase stomach acid

Jakarta

For those who have diseases related to stomach acid, it is important to pay attention to their food intake. Limit consumption of these 3 types of vegetables which can trigger an increase in stomach acid.

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) sufferers must pay attention to their food intake, including vegetables. Eating vegetables is good for health, but you should stay away from vegetables that cause stomach acid to rise.

The condition of increased stomach acid means that acid from the stomach returns to the esophagus area. Gastric acid reflux can trigger a number of symptoms such as heartburn (a burning sensation), belching, chest pain, and a sour taste in the mouth.

Normally, stomach acid will not rise to the esophagus because there is a lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a kind of ‘faucet’ that only opens when swallowing or burping. However, according to Healthline, in GERD sufferers, this faucet does not function perfectly.

Here are 3 types of vegetables that can trigger an increase in stomach acid:

1. Cabbage

Cabbage is generally consumed as fresh vegetables, where without processing, the cabbage can simply be washed clean and ready to eat. Those who have stomach acid disease or a history of ulcers need to consider or consult if they want to consume cabbage.

According to Livestrong, cabbage is rarely or almost never included as a food that triggers increased stomach acid. However, a number of GERD sufferers say this vegetable makes stomach acid rise.

Not only is stomach acid good, cabbage can trigger discomfort in the stomach or bloating because it can produce gas.

2. Tomatoes

Several types of tomatoes are used in cooking and are often called vegetable tomatoes. Like tomatoes which are consumed as fruit, vegetable tomatoes are also high in acid content.

Consuming food that is high in acid content can indeed trigger stomach discomfort and cause stomach acid to rise.

3. Chili

GERD sufferers are advised not to eat spicy food. Chili is also one of the vegetables that makes stomach acid rise.

A number of studies have proven that consuming spicy food is associated with heartburn or one of the symptoms of increased stomach acid. Spicy food can further irritate the esophagus which is already inflamed due to exposure to stomach acid.
