Banyuwangi Java Robusta Coffee Receives Geographical Indication After 2 Year Process

Thanks to its uniqueness, Banyuwangi Javanese Robusta Coffee has achieved Geographical Indication status. This type of coffee is special because it comes from a specific region, resulting in a ‘chocolaty’ taste in the brew.

The Ministry of Law, through the Director General of Intellectual Property, officially issued a Geographical Indication (IG) registration certificate for Banyuwangi Java Robusta Coffee.

The Geographical Indication Certificate for Banyuwangi Java Robusta Coffee was handed over directly by the Director General of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Law, Razilu to Plt. Banyuwangi Regent Sugirah at the Banyuwangi Regent’s Office, Tuesday (19/11/2024).

Razilu explained that the process of obtaining IG certification for Banyuwangi Java Robusta Coffee was a long process. Starting in 2022 through collaboration between the Banyuwangi Agriculture and Food Service, MPIG Bumi Blambangan Robusta Coffee (MPIG-KRBB), and the Jember Coffee and Cocoa Research Center.

“The characteristics and characteristics of Banyuwangi robusta coffee have been recognized. It is hoped that the development of the Banyuwangi Java Robusta Coffee business will receive legal protection, receive recognition for the quality and uniqueness of the product, and preserve the traditions of coffee production procedures (customs) that already exist in Banyuwangi Regency, Razilu said.

Geographical Indication is a sign that indicates the area of ​​origin of an item/product due to geographical environmental factors such as natural factors, human factors or a combination of both which provide a certain reputation, quality and characteristics.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights team led by the DJKI Geographical Indication (IG) expert team in July 2024 carried out a substantive inspection. One of them is by direct discussions with several farmer groups to obtain as much information as possible regarding Robusta Java Coffee from Banyuwangi to be followed up in meetings to determine its suitability as IG.

“Banyuwangi Regency is one of the contributors to Robusta coffee production in East Java with an area of ​​coffee plantations reaching 9,778 hectares, with hilly land contours with an average planting height varying between (100 -1,000) meters above sea level, which is considered ideal for Robusta coffee trees ,” said Acting Regent Sugirah.

The robusta coffee producers in Banyuwangi are the Mount Raung and Mount Ijen areas. Supported by superior seeds and topography, Banyuwangi robusta coffee, especially on the slopes of Mount Raung, is able to produce a unique taste. There is a combination of sour taste with chocolate caramel that is felt on the tongue.

Banyuwangi robusta coffee has been exported and supplies European markets, including Switzerland and Italy. Even in the midst of the 2020 Covid pandemic, Banyuwangi still consistently exported its superior coffee to supply the European market.

“Because our processed coffee has a distinctive taste like chocolate which Italians like,” said Sugirah.

Sugirah hopes that the ratification of the Banyuwangi Robusta Coffee GI will not only provide economic benefits for the community, but will also be a reflection of Banyuwangi’s natural and cultural wealth.

“With the ratification of the Banyuwangi robusta coffee GI, we will promote our superior coffee products as part of our cultural richness as well as efforts to protect against misuse, counterfeiting and help maintain the distinctive identity of our coffee,” said Sugirah.

On that occasion, Sugirah revealed that the district government would continue to facilitate other regional specialty products to obtain intellectual property recognition. Apart from coffee, the district government has also registered Red Durian to obtain IG.

“We have registered the red durian, we just need to complete a few missing documents. The district government is also preparing IG registration for mangosteen, cocoa and Excelsa coffee,” he concluded.
