According to the Head of Bantarkawung District, Eko Supriyanto, coffee plants in this area have been around for a long time. The plant grows wild on residents’ land and Perhutani land. Local residents even think that this plant is not an economically profitable commodity.
However, residents’ views on coffee have turned around 180 degrees since the trend of drinking coffee spread to regional areas. Drinking coffee has now almost become a tradition for Indonesian people.

“The taste is different even though it is the same type of robusta coffee. Bantarkawung coffee doesn’t have a sour taste at all. It’s really true bitter coffee,” he explained.
When met separately, Abdul Aziz, Chair of the Sindangwangi Bantarkawung Village Coffee Farmers Group, said that the potential for coffee in his village is very large. Robusta coffee plants are scattered throughout the forests and also in people’s yards. In a year, the coffee harvest reaches 139 tons.
In order to produce a distinctive coffee taste, members of this farmer group are trained in processing it until it becomes ready-to-sell coffee. Apart from that, they are trained to breed coffee as an effort to develop seeds. However, this effort is still hampered by a lack of equipment such as grinding tools and others.
“We sell Alam Segara Coffee from Sindangwangi in 100 gram packages. The price per ounce is 9,100 grams) IDR 12 thousand,” he stressed.
He is optimistic robusta coffee Gunung Segara can compete in the market. According to him, local Sindangwangi coffee has a characteristic strong bitter taste so it can provide a different sensation for coffee lovers.
“The bitterness is really strong, and really felt on the tongue. The aroma is also strong, compared to Arabica,” said Abdul Azis.
