Bali’s Culinary Heritage, 6 Traditional Balinese Snacks You Must Try

Moreover, market snacks are cheap and taste no less delicious than other snacks, making traditional Balinese snacks always a dream for local and foreign people. So, here are the traditional snacks that you must try if you visit Bali, quoted from various sources:

1. Laklak

Laklak is a traditional Balinese snack that has a shape resembling a serabi. Laklak is made from flour, pandan leaves or suji leaves and a mixture of betel lime. This snack is usually served with a drizzle of liquid brown sugar and a sprinkling of grated coconut which creates a distinctive combination of sweet and savory flavors.

What makes this snack even more unique is the cooking process which uses a traditional jug and placed over a fire pit. Laklak has a soft texture on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

2. Klepon

Klepon is a traditional Balinese cake that can be easily found on the side of the road. This snack is a ball of green sticky rice dough filled with liquid brown sugar inside. This snack is made from sticky rice flour mixed with pandan to give it a natural color and aroma. This snack is served with a sprinkling of grated coconut on top, and the way to eat it is to put it whole in your mouth, so that when you bite it it doesn’t splatter everywhere.

3. Sumping

Sumping is a traditional Balinese snack that is very easy to find in the market in the morning. This snack is made from rice flour and coconut milk, filled with pumpkin and grated coconut, then wrapped in banana leaves before steaming. What characterizes this snack is the sticky and sweet taste of the mixture of yellow pumpkin and grated coconut.

4. Banana Rai

Still with flour, but this time using banana as the main ingredient. As the name suggests, banana rai is made from horn bananas or plantains that are not too ripe. Bananas are peeled, then coated with a mixture made from rice flour, tapioca flour and coconut milk. Then served with a sprinkling of grated coconut and liquid brown sugar.

5. Pillow

This snack is made from sticky rice with various mixtures according to taste, including jackfruit, banana, coconut and red beans which, when combined, produce a delicious taste. Wrapped in coconut leaves which are wrapped around and tied tightly so that the contents are solid.

6. Sloppy

This snack is always available during Nyepi Day celebrations. This snack is made from coconut sugar mixed with coconut milk, pandan leaves and water, which is then boiled until cooked. And the mixture will be poured over rice flour, tapioca or sago flour.

Then make a container to wrap the cerorot using coconut tree leaves that have been cleaned and then rolled into a cone shape. The mixture is then poured into the cone container, then steamed for 15 minutes.
