Jakarta – The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) has succeeded in penetrating the world market for specialty coffee trade. This was seen in the series of Global Coffee Specialty Expo events which were held for 3 days in Boston, United States.
“This series brought Indonesia to achieve transactions of US$ 26.3 million (Rp. 360 billion) specifically for specialty coffee,” said Washington’s Agricultural Attaché, Hari Edi Soekirno, in a written statement, Wednesday (15/5/2019).
The World Brewers Championship is a prestigious competition that showcases the craft and skill of hand filtering coffee, with contestants coming from all over the world. Meanwhile, the World Barista Championship is a World Barista championship held by World Coffee Events every year.
Hari said that there were around 13 thousand visitors from a total of 75 participating countries who took part in the event. Indonesia itself sent 7 representatives, each from CV Gayo Mandiri, Santiang Exports, Meukat Komoditi Gayo, PTPN XII, Gayo Bedetak Nusantara, Upnormal Coffee Roastery and Tentera Coffee Roasters.
“On this occasion, Indonesia also took part in the World Brewers Championship and World Barista Championship,” he said.
“There, Attani and his staff were also present and collaborated with Atdag, ITPC and the Indonesian Consulate General. We carried out various promotional activities for specialty coffee commodities to the American and international public,” he said.
Hari explained further, globally the entire series of events focused on awareness of monetary use on environmental and fair trade issues. In the discussion, it was stated that all parties need to invest in infrastructure to grow the economic sector in a country.
“This is what is called the level of public investment. This step will certainly really help the community’s economy proportionally and is able to increase technological capabilities,” he concluded.
Investment needs must also be met properly without damaging fiscal sustainability. More than that, Hari continued, this step is needed to improve governance of infrastructure investment and currency value.
“For this reason, we hope for support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Bappenas in submitting proposals for the FFPr (Food for Progress) program worth USD 10-12 million on time through third parties, both NGOs, universities and associations related to the field of horticulture to be submitted to USDA no later than 15 May 2019,” he said.
