Semarang – The city of Semarang is known as a culinary paradise, with a variety of typical foods that are appetizing. One of them is frog chicken, a unique menu which is a relic of the Dutch colonial era and is now the first choice in special celebrations with family.

Even though the name is “frog chicken”, make no mistake, this food does not contain frogs at all. The name is taken from the shape of a fat and plump chicken, similar to a frog. Frog Chicken is one of the legendary culinary in Semarang, with a distinctive taste and manufacturing technique that requires special expertise.

The process of making frog chickens is fairly complicated. All the skin and bones of chicken must be released carefully without damaging the original shape of the meat. After that, chicken meat is cut and ground with potatoes, eggs, and other complementary spices. This mixture is then put back into a processed chicken skin, coupled with two whole boiled chicken eggs. To close the chicken skin, sew using a needle and thread, then baked in the oven for 45 minutes until it is perfectly cooked and brownish.

This frog chicken dish is usually served in special moments, such as holidays or birthday celebrations. In Semarang, Ina is one of the sellers who still maintains this traditional recipe, offering a frog chicken package complete with vegetables and sauce at affordable prices, starting from 100 thousand rupiah.
