Oolong tea, which is popular in China, has various health benefits. Starting from losing weight, gut health, to preventing insomnia.
Oolong tea is a type of tea that is fermented. Derived from Camellia sinensis leaves, the tea leaves are fermented first before being dried. The scale is somewhere between green tea and black tea.
Reporting from Real Simple (26/12/2024), the characteristics of oolong tea were explained by Peter Goggi, president of the Tea Council of the USA. The oxidation process of oolong tea is uneven and depends on time.
“Some oolongs are slightly oxidized and others are highly oxidized. This means there is a wide range of distinctive oolong flavors. However, high-value oolongs are usually clear in color and have a hint of peach or pear,” explains Goggi.

Oolong tea also contains high levels of antioxidants like other types of tea. The antioxidant content in oolong tea is polyphenols consisting of theaflavins, thearubigins, and EGCG.
This was also explained in a study in China. The study found that when studying 30 different types of tea, oolong had a higher amount of antioxidants than other teas.
2. Lose Weight
You can also lose weight by consuming healthy drinks, one of which is oolong tea. An animal study showed that oolong tea extract can reduce belly fat.
Oolong tea is also believed to help fat oxidation, because it encourages active enzymes. The benefits of oolong tea can also speed up the body’s metabolic processes, thereby reducing weight. The caffeine content in oolong tea can also increase energy expenditure.
