These 5 Ultra Processed Foods Turn Out to be Beneficial for Consumption

KOMPAS.com – Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are often in the news due to various warnings about their health risks.

However, there is no clear legal definition of what UPF is, so many types of everyday food fall into this category.

UPF usually refers to foods that are not simply processed (such as refined, pasteurized, or frozen).

However, it is also modified industrially using ingredients not commonly found in home kitchens, such as stabilizers, emulgators, preservatives, and chemical sweeteners.

Although UPF is often linked to various diseases such as obesity, cancer, and depression, there is no certainty about what actually makes this food risky.

Is it high in fat, sugar and salt, or additional ingredients such as preservatives and emulsifiers?

What is certain is that the convenience and time efficiency offered by UPF makes it a popular choice in today’s busy, budget-friendly lifestyle.

Additionally, some UPFs also have unexpected nutritional benefits and can even be life-savers. Here are five examples of ultra-processed foods that are actually beneficial to consume.

1. Baby formula milk

Around a third of all baby food sold in the UK is UPF, including formula. This product consists of powdered milk protein, vegetable oil, lactose, added sugar, vitamins, minerals and other additives.

Formula milk can be a life-saving product because it provides complete nutrition for babies, especially for those who have complications due to insufficient food intake.

2. Marmite

Marmite is a bread spread made from yeast extract, salt, and spice and vegetable extracts. Marmite falls into the UPF category. However, its nutritional contribution is invaluable, especially for pregnant women or those on a vegan diet.

Marmite is rich in B vitamins which help manage stress and reduce anxiety. In addition, Marmite contains magnesium which helps relax muscles and nerves, as well as potassium which supports healthy blood pressure.

3. Plant-based milk alternative

Plant-based milk alternatives are an option for those who follow a plant-based diet or have allergies to cow’s milk. These products are often fortified with vitamins and minerals, so they are classified as UPF.

Although lower in protein than cow’s milk, fortified plant milk can provide additional nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D, which are important for bone health.

4. Low-fat flavored yogurt

Yogurt is often considered a healthy food. However, flavored or low-fat yogurts are often considered UPF because they contain artificial sweeteners, such as acesulfame K or sucralose, as well as additional ingredients such as pectin or guar gum.
