“A whole food, plant-based diet high in fiber can minimize saturated fat and trans fat,” says nutritionist Dana Ellis Hunnes.

Furthermore, the nutritionist also advised increasing consumption of nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit. A plant-based diet can reduce cholesterol plaque in the body.

2. Lower the risk of stroke

A plant-based diet can also reduce the risk of stroke. This has been proven through a study published in Neurology in 2021.

This research shows that a plant-based diet can prevent all types of stroke. Researchers from Harvard noted a 10% reduction in the risk of stroke with this diet.

Therefore, the researcher recommends consuming green vegetables, whole grains and nuts more regularly. “This can be treated with whole foods,” he says.

3. Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology suggests that a plant-based diet may help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes.

Nutritionist Hunner explained further that when we eat animal foods and processed foods the body will initiate an insulin response and an inflammatory response.

This condition can cause inflammation and high blood sugar, thereby increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. “A whole foods, plant-based diet reverses this and lowers inflammation and blood sugar in one fell swoop,” he said.
