4 Traditional cakes during Christmas celebrations from various countries



Jakarta (ANTARA) – Christmas celebrations are always filled with heavy food to entertain guests or family who come to visit. However, apart from heavy food, there are also many sweet foods that are always accompaniments at the dinner table which are typical of several countries.

Below are some classic cakes that are usually present during Christmas celebrations, summarized by ANTARA from various sources.

1. Plum cake

Fruit cake or plum cake is a common food at Christmas celebrations in India.

Every time you hold a Christmas party at home, the plum cake on the dining table becomes the center of attention, especially when it just comes out of the oven. This chocolate-colored cake filled with dried fruit and nuts is soaked in rum or brandy days in advance.

Plum cake has always been a characteristic in completing the essence of Christmas celebrations and is easily found in bakeries in India.

2. Roscon de Reyes

Known as the “King of Rolls”, Roscón de Reyes is one of the most classic Spanish Christmas desserts there is.

This food is usually eaten on Three Kings Day (January 6). Originating from the time when the Romans controlled much of Spain, this dish was adopted by Christians in the 4th century when the Church made it part of the annual celebration of the holiday.

These delicious cookies have become an important part of Spanish holidays.

3. Bread pudding

Bread pudding is a typical Christmas snack found in almost all countries of the world, including America.

Bread pudding is usually made because a lot of sweet food is wasted or not eaten because they are already full of heavy food.

This method makes sweet food less ‘wasteful’ and can be enjoyed in a different way, it is fruity, contains alcohol and fortunately is not heavy to end the event.

This pudding is made with a mixture of bread and butter and baked in the oven so it is delicious served warm. A sprinkling of cinnamon sugar and custard will add to the rich taste of this Christmas snack.

4. Yule log

Yule log is a typical French chocolate cake in the shape of a log decorated with Christmas objects made of plastic or filled with sugar.

This is a famous Christmas cake there and is usually at a dinner party or called Réveillon which is usually held on December 24th.

This dinner is sacred for French people with a menu that varies according to region.

Apart from Yule log, Foie gras is also consumed in Provence, France. Apart from that, Proven France also has a tradition of eating 13 desserts.

The dessert is used to symbolize Jesus and his 12 apostles (orange, pear, apple, plum, melon, white nougat, black nougat, pompe à l’huile [kue pipih yang diisi dengan minyak zaitun]sorb, dates, dried figs, almonds, nuts or hazelnuts, black raisins).
