Eating with friends turns out to make women consume more calories

Eating with friends is fun. But according to recent research, women who eat with friends actually consume more calories.

Women gather together more often, whether to eat together or to go to the toilet. Most women spend time eating with their friends, but it seems like this habit should be reduced.

Reporting from DailyMailUK (29/12), women who eat with female friends often eat more than when they eat alone.

This was concluded through research from the University of Birmingham, which was published in the journal Appetite.

They conducted an experiment involving 63 women and examined their eating habits when hanging out with friends. This research lasted for three days, with participants eating food with friends, as well as three meals alone.

As a result, the average woman consumes an extra 150 calories per meal when they eat with friends. In total, they ate an extra 540 calories during the three days of the study.

Meanwhile, if they eat alone, they consume fewer calories from the food and they care more about the food they choose.

The second experiment was also carried out on 63 women, and it turned out that most women who ate a lot when hanging out with their friends had a habit of eating a lot. This causes these women to gain as much as 4 kg in weight in a year. That is if they eat with friends, at least once a day.

The reason why women eat more when they are with others is because they are not aware. People often overeat, because of the excitement of the conversation, and they don’t realize that they have eaten a lot.

This was explained by Professor Suzzane Higgs as the head of this research. According to him, the results of this study would be the same if it were carried out on men.

“People should pay more attention to eating during social interaction, even if it’s just a short lunch, it can make people eat more. Even though this study only examined women, we think the results will be the same in men,” he said.

“The advice from the results of this study is not to forbid people from eating with their friends, or suggest eating alone. But to be more concerned about the food they eat. Maybe it’s better to plan what food to order, so people can order healthier food , and it doesn’t matter if the portion size is too large,” he advised.

“Or alternatively, people can prepare themselves by eating less before or after eating with friends,” he concluded.
