PepsiCo will open its first factory in Indonesia in early 2025

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – PepsiCo Indonesia will open the first snack factory in Indonesia, precisely in Deltamas, Cikarang, West Java, and start operating in early 2025.

“Hopefully early next year we will launchingPepsiCo’s first factory in Indonesia. The Indonesian government is not bad excited because there is new investment, and the value is quite large, IDR 3 trillion,” said Director of Government Affairs and Corporate Communications PepsiCo Indonesia, Gabrielle Angriani Johny at the PepsiCo Indonesia’s Year-End Media Gathering, at Toby’s Estate Gunawarman, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (11 /12/2024).

PepsiCo’s first factory in Indonesia stands on about six hectares of land, which has already been built ground breaking in 2023. This factory, said Gabrielle, will later produce Lay’s, Cheetos and Doritos.

It was further stated that the opening of PepsiCo’s first factory in Indonesia was carried out because it saw a big opportunity for the Indonesian market.

“This factory will use 100 percent renewable electricity from the first day of operation, then use 100 percent recycled leaf water, so water consumption can also (support) sustainability,” he said.

Then, for the plastic packaging of this product produced, in the first year launching, PepsiCo is committed to being able to immediately take back the packaging and recycle the packaging. The realization of this commitment, he said, will be carried out in stages.

Not only that, PepsiCo is also committed to developing corn and potato agriculture in Indonesia. Remember, the three products that will be produced in Indonesia are made from potatoes and corn.

“The potatoes are different, most of them are sold in Australia, Canada, China, we hope to bring that technology and transfer it to local farmers. So local farmers can develop the same type of potato,” said Gabrielle.

Regarding raw materials, Gabrielle continued, at the start of production PepsCo will still use imported potatoes, and will combine them with local corn from Central Java.

He explained that the potatoes used were industrial potatoes, different from the potatoes commonly found on the market.

The difference is, common potatoes on the market will quickly become soft (not crispy) after being sliced and fried. Meanwhile, industrial potatoes remain crunchy, because the sugar content is not too high.

“We will focus on the Indonesian market with export ambitions,” he said.

Apart from the presence of the PepsiCo factory in Indonesia, he said there was a possibility that PepsiCo products would still be imported into Indonesia to increase product variants on the market.

But currently, he said, PepsiCo’s big business is currently focused on local production.

He said, with the presence of the PepsiCo factory in Indonesia, it would also absorb Indonesian workers.
