Summarizing realsample.com (15/10), the following explanation was expressed by Seema Bonney, MD, functional doctor and founder of the Anti-Aging and Longevity Center of Philadelphia.

Dr. Bonney revealed that caffeine does have benefits for eliminating drowsiness and suppressing adenosine. On the other hand, alcohol actually causes adenosine to accumulate and makes a person feel sleepy.

When the two are mixed together, the caffeine in coffee can mask the depressant effects of alcohol. Dr. Bonney also revealed, “This makes drinkers feel more alert and gives them the feeling they can handle more alcohol,” he said.

But caffeine does not necessarily guarantee that someone will wake up from the effects of a hangover. Caffeine has no effect on alcohol metabolism and the liver, thus, it does not reduce blood alcohol concentration or reduce the effects of coffee.
