1. GERD
If you have a history of stomach acid disease or GERD, it is recommended not to consume tomatoes. You see, the acid levels in tomatoes can trigger stomach acid reflux.
According to Dr Edwina Raj, Senior Nutritionist at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, the high levels of acid in tomatoes have the potential to cause heartburn or worsen stomach acid reflux symptoms. Therefore, if you have a history of GERD, you should reduce your consumption of tomatoes.
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Someone who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is also advised not to consume tomatoes. Some common symptoms that are often felt include bloating, pain, or repeated stomach cramps.
If the sufferer consumes tomatoes in large quantities, it can trigger digestive disorders. So, you should reduce your consumption of tomatoes because this fruit contains quite a lot of acid.
3. Histamine Intolerance
Histamine intolerance is a condition characterized by the body’s inability to break down and metabolize histamine properly. Well, tomatoes are considered a food that has moderate to high histamine levels.
Therefore, people who have histamine intolerance can experience symptoms such as headaches, skin rashes, nasal congestion, or gastrointestinal disorders after consuming tomatoes.
4. Kidney Stones
A person can experience kidney stones because they consume certain foods, such as foods that contain too much calcium oxalate. These natural compounds are generally found in fruit and vegetables, one of which is tomatoes.
So, if you have a history of kidney stones or are at risk of experiencing them, you should avoid consuming tomatoes in large quantities.
