Ripening mangoes quickly can be a challenge, especially if you want a sweet and fruity fruit juicy without waiting too long.

Below is a brief explanation of the ripening process and some practical tricks you can try at home.

What is the Maturation Process?

Fruit ripening occurs due to the release of ethylene gas, which triggers changes in the fruit, such as:

  • Softening of cell walls
  • Converting starch to sugar
  • Decreased acid levels

This process makes the fruit sweeter, softer, and ready to enjoy. However, if left too long, the fruit will rot.

By understanding how ethylene gas works, we can speed up the ripening of certain fruits, such as mangoes, in an effective way.

How to ripen mangoes quickly

The following is how to ripen mangoes quickly, especially for those of you who buy them when they are not yet ripe.

1. Use a bag filled with rice

This method is quite popular and proven to be effective. The method:

  • Prepare a rice bag and put raw mango in it
  • Close the bag tightly to lock the ethylene gas around the mango

Mangoes stored in rice for five days become sweeter, softer, and juicy compared to mangoes left in the open air.

However, make sure you check your mangoes every day to prevent rotting and damage to the rice.

2. Place in a paper bag with the banana

Paper bags can help speed fruit ripening. Ripe bananas produce high amounts of ethylene gas. Here are the steps:
