Indonesia is known for its coffee diversity which is interesting to discuss. Many traditional coffees are unique and taste delicious.
Indonesia will be the fourth largest coffee producing country in the world in 2024. There are at least 642,000 metric tons of coffee produced in Indonesia, apart from that, Indonesia contributes 6% as a coffee contributing country in the world.
Most coffee farmers in Indonesia produce Robusta coffee, which reaches 91% and the rest is Arabica coffee. From here, many creations and traditional coffee blends emerged which are different in each region in Indonesia.
Reporting from the TasteAtlas and Wonderful Indonesia sites (11/15), here are 6 traditional coffees that are unique and authentic to Indonesia.
1. Tebalek Coffee, Aceh
In first place is kupi khop typical of Meulaboh, West Aceh. This coffee gets a lot of attention from coffee lovers because of its unique presentation which doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else. It is often referred to as Tebalek (upside down) coffee because of its unique presentation.
Kupi khop is served in a glass, covered tightly with a small plate, then quickly turned over. This process, which is related to the amount of air pressure, allows the coffee filling not to spill. To enjoy it, kupi khop connoisseurs can blow the coffee filling into the glass with a straw or pipette. Later the water will slowly come out of the sides of the glass.
For this type of coffee, Kupi Khop uses robusta coffee beans whose grains are still coarse. In 2019 the West Aceh Regency Government declared Kupi Khop as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBT) of West Aceh Regency.

Brewed coffee is the favorite of many people. Especially for Indonesians. This is because the process of making brewed coffee is easy and doesn’t take long.
This only requires hot water to be brewed into the coffee grounds, then stirred until evenly distributed and the coffee grounds fall to the bottom of the glass. This coffee is often found on the island of Java, and is mostly mixed with granulated sugar so that it is not too bitter.
It is believed that this coffee brewing method was first introduced by traders from the Middle East. Because the method is similar to brewing Turkish coffee.

Joss coffee is prepared with a mixture of black coffee and sugar which is brewed with hot water and then added with several pieces of charcoal to it. Apart from being dipped in pure black coffee, the hot charcoal can also be dipped in milk coffee.

Mixing raw egg yolk into food or drinks is not something that many food connoisseurs like. But adding an egg yolk to the coffee actually makes this typical Minang coffee even more special.
In Padang there is a coffee concoction known as talua coffee, which is a concoction of hot black coffee, added with sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon powder and an egg yolk and also added with orange. Before serving, this coffee is shaken until it is frothy and the taste will be soft when it touches the tongue.
