KOMPAS.com – The Malaysian government is introducing a variety of local culinary delights to the Indonesian people through Malaysia Gastronomy Truly Asia 2024 starting today, Monday (25/11/2024) to Wednesday (27/11/2024) at the Le Meridien Hotel, South Jakarta.
This event was held as a platform to introduce the various cultures and culinary delights in Malaysia to the Indonesian people.
“Malaysia Gastronomy Truly Asia is a platform to promote cultural diversity in Malaysia through culinary delights,” said Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Indonesia, HE Dato’ Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin when opening the Malaysia Gastronomy Truly Asia 2024 event at the Le Meridien Hotel, Jakarta South, Monday (25/11/2024).

Dato’ Syed said that the culinary delights in Malaysia reflect the diverse identities of the Malaysian population. This can be seen from the variety of culinary delights that come not only from Malaysia, but also from China, India and Peranakan.
According to Dato’ Syed, food is a universal language that can be accepted by everyone and various backgrounds.

Therefore, through this gastronomic event, he added, it is hoped that Indonesian people can experience the uniqueness and culinary delights that exist in Malaysia.
“It is hoped that with this program, we can strengthen relations between Malaysia and Indonesia. Not only will we introduce culinary delights, but we can also open our hearts to continue visiting Malaysia,” said Dato’ Syed.
He continued, until October 2024, the number of tourists from Indonesia visiting Malaysia will be around 3 people. Meanwhile, in the same period last year, the number of tourists from Indonesia who visited Malaysia was 3.1 million people.
“It is hoped that this figure will increase, there is one month left, at the same time, tourists from Malaysia will also be the largest number of tourists coming to Indonesia. So it is hoped that we can visit each other between the two countries,” he said.

Dato’ Syed believes that gastronomic diplomacy is a universal thing and can be enjoyed by everyone. It does not close boundaries for any race, country or religion.
“I think this is effective diplomacy, from the stomach to the heart,” he said.
At the introduction of Malaysia Gastronomy Truly Asia 2024, the culinary delights served were served directly by a chef from Malaysia, as well as the Executive Chef of Le Meridien, Justin Kam.
One of the main dishes served is Penang Assam Laksa, which was ranked 7th out of the 50 most delicious foods in the world according to CNN in 2021.

Another dish is Nyonya Mango Kerabu, which is a typical Malaysian mango salad. Then there are Penang Popiah Basah (Malaysian wet spring rolls), Nasi Lemak, Penang Char Koay Kak, Mamak Style Fish Curry, East Kerabu Udang, and Nyonya Acar Awak.
“Every food holds a story of history, culture and tradition,” he said.
Dato’ Syed said, culinary voters not only look at rankings, but also want to provide an experience of Malaysian culinary tastes.
“There are typical Malay, Chinese, Indian dishes, and there are also Peranakan dishes, because we have them tagline: Malaysia Truly Asia,” he concluded.
